Authorities investigating an allegation of rape are reporting that the alleged rapist, sprinter Pinki Pramanik, who won a gold medal in a women’s relay race in the 2006 Asian Games, is actually a man. The alleged victim has stated that Pramanik raped, assaulted her and reneged on a promise of marriage. Along with the charge of rape, an eight-member medical review board submitted results from a genetic test that supposedly prove that Pramanik is a male. Pramanik, who apparently has not been given access to the test results, of course, denies the rape and the allegation that she is a male.
The jury is definitely still out for me. Knowing India’s history with fumbling sex/gender tests, I definitely need more facts before I form an opinion beyond my initial gut reaction of, quote the eloquent Kanye West, “That ish cray!”
Of course I’ll keep my eye out for updates so that I can pass them along to you Gladiathers. Here’s how the Associated Press has reported it: http://espn.go.com/espnw/mobile/touch/olympics/8630486/indian-athlete-declared-male-rape-claim
