Breast Cancer & GladiatHers

Breast cancer has touched the lives of many.  For survivors and family and friends of those who have lost their battle with the disease, it leaves unforgettable marks of victory or pain that remind them of how breast cancer forever changed their lives.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I wanted to share a brief list of GladiatHers who battled and won their fight against the disease.  Not only have these women triumphed, but they have also continued to fight by bringing awareness to the disease and trying to save the lives of others.  Pop the hood on the slideshow and see if you don’t learn a thing or two about these awesome women. Afterwards take a look at some facts about breast cancer in the United States.



The Facts in the US

  1. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

  2. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

  3. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.

  4. Breast cancer incident rates are highest in non-Hispanic white women; however, African-American and Latina women have the highest death rates.  African-American and Latina women historically have not received the potentially life-saving, proper and regular screening that is necessary to detect the disease early. 

  5. Asian/Pacific Islander women have the lowest rates of breast cancer.

  6. Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die 

The Warning Signs

Early detection of the disease can save a woman’s life, so it is important that women are aware of the warning signs so they can monitor and exam themselves at home in addition to submitting to exams like mammograms and MRIs as directed by physicians. Here are some warning signs of breast cancer:

  1. Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area

  2. Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast

  3. Change in the size or shape of the breast

  4. Dimpling or puckering of the skin

  5. Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple

  6. Pulling in of the nipple or other parts of the breast

  7. Sudden nipple discharge

  8. New pain in one spot that does not go away

Spread the word! Breast cancer does NOT have to be death sentence!!
