Longtime Senior Deputy Athletics Director, Nina King has been promoted to the new Athletic Director at Duke. As the first Black Woman to hold this title, it is definitely a groundbreaking hire for the Blue Devils as former Athletic Director Kevin White announced his retirement in January.
The ACC now has three of the Power 5’s six females Athletics Directors and King is now one of them. A role she is excited to take on after almost 14 years with Duke. King recognizes the importance of this appointment and the responsibility ahead. She plans to embrace being considered a role model stating in her press conference, “I want to show little girls who look like me that this is possible.”
Some may be asking why King? But really, the hire makes sense. King is deeply committed to continuing the strong tradition of academic and athletic excellence at Duke. King not only has years of experience in the athletic department, she has served in a myriad key roles working directly with longtime athletic director Kevin White both at Notre Dame and Duke. A Sports Business Journal Forty Under 40 Recipient, King's impact is evident and she now has the opportunity to continue leading for women in sports.
We are excited to see this barrier breaking, history making moment in college athletics but we also recognize that there is more work to be done. As women continue to create a seat at the table, GladiatHers® will continue our commitment to highlighting and championing women in sports!
